# Scaling Snowmaking Tech with a Smarter IOS Build

## MISSION-CRITICAL SNOW

Ski seasons wait for no one. When opening day arrives, the slopes need to be ready, whether the weather cooperated or not.

Founded in 1990, TechnoAlpin is the world's leading supplier of snowmaking equipment for ski areas worldwide: the infrastructure behind reliable ski seasons. Their systems (pumps, compressors, valves, snow guns) coordinate across entire mountains in real time, in conditions that push hardware and humans to their limits.

When the natural snow can't be counted on, TechnoAlpin is what keeps the mountain open — right down to the courses at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

# VISION

## READING THE MOUNTAIN

TechnoAlpin had an app. What they needed was the iOS version.

TATASSpro Mobile, their technician-facing control platform, had been running on Android for over a decade. Battle-tested, deeply embedded in operations and packed with features built up over years of real-world use. They needed a native iOS counterpart built to the same standard.

An earlier build hadn't met the bar they needed. For a company whose software directly determines whether their customers open on time, that wasn't a risk they could take twice. They came in with a sharp brief and sharper expectations: a senior team, a rigorous process and engineering that could earn back their trust.

They also needed it to scale. Building iOS from scratch without a shared foundation would mean duplicating effort forever, which slows every feature, raises every cost and dilutes every future investment. So the brief had two parts: a modern native iOS app for technicians in the field, and a foundation that would make future cross-platform development faster for everyone.

Parity was the baseline. Modernization was the goal.

# CHALLENGE

## VARIABLE CONDITIONS

Most iOS apps talk to servers. ATASSpro Mobile talks to hardware: pumps, valves, compressors, snow producers. All of it over Bluetooth Low Energy, often in cold, demanding mountain environments.

Out in the field, technicians use it to authenticate into systems, monitor live production data, manage snow producers, receive critical alerts and navigate complex system maps. In conditions like these, there's no margin for lag or confusion.

The stakes are immediate. A failure during peak season is costly and visible. Resorts, operators and athletes all depend on everything running exactly as it should.

The technical bar followed from there: close-to-hardware Bluetooth connectivity, real-time data visualization, deep machine-room logic, a UI fast enough to be useful when you're already troubleshooting on the slope.

And under all of it, the 2026 snow season wasn't moving. With the Winter Olympics drawing global attention to the mountains, every system on the slopes had more eyes on it than usual.

# WHAT WE DID

## PERFORMANCE, ON-PISTE

STRV embedded directly into TechnoAlpin's process. We started with architecture, because the choices you make there compound across every future release.

Swift handled the UI and the hardware-critical layers, where Bluetooth communication and system integrations leave no room for abstraction. Kotlin Multiplatform handled shared business logic, so the same code could power Android and iOS without compromising what had to be flawless on either side. That architecture gave TechnoAlpin a modular, scalable foundation that speeds up future development and leaves fewer places to break, which means lower long-term maintenance cost and faster time-to-market on every feature that comes next. [More on the KMP approach](https://www.strv.com/blog/full-circle-production-kotlin-multiplatform-for-technoalpin).

From there, product management and QA ran in tight cycles. Close collaboration with TechnoAlpin's internal software team kept us aligned on operational priorities, not just technical ones. Every QA cycle was treated the way you'd treat infrastructure testing, because that's what it was. There was no consumer beta buffer.

The final app handles authentication, live system monitoring, alert management and detailed machine-room navigation.

### Key Insights

## Edge control

### Native where it counts. Shared where it scales.

When an app talks directly to hardware, there's no tolerance for abstraction where it matters most. Bluetooth communication and system-level integrations demanded precision that only native Swift could guarantee. KMP took the shared logic. Swift took the UI and the integrations. That balance gave TechnoAlpin both control and efficiency: a codebase they can maintain, extend and trust, with quality their customers depend on every winter.

## Before The lifts open

### Stability > Shortcuts

Snowmaking doesn't wait. The iOS build was delivered in 6 months, ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics. Exactly the readiness the season demanded. That kind of timeline, on infrastructure-grade software, required more than good engineering. That kind of timeline, on this kind of software, took more than good engineering. It took structured product management, proactive QA and a team that knew which corners can never be cut. When the season opened, the app worked.

## The snowball effect

### Trust earned, scope expanded

The initial iOS launch was just the beginning. One successful delivery earned the trust to expand into a broader, ongoing collaboration: an Android app being built on shared Kotlin Multiplatform business logic, and deeper KMP explorations that now shape how STRV ships production KMP. That's the kind of partnership we're proudest of: one that compounds.

# OUTCOME

## BLUEBIRD DAYS AHEAD

The app they'd built: 10 years, 150,000+ lines of code, a new snow gun almost every season. What we shipped: full iOS parity, in less than a year.

TechnoAlpin now has a mobile platform that operates at the same standard as the machinery it controls. With shared logic powering both platforms and a scalable architecture in place, future features no longer mean double the effort.

And as winter seasons grow more unpredictable, that kind of reliability matters more than ever.
